Lourdes – the largest sanctuary in France, one of the world’s largest centers of Marian devotion and most popular pilgrimage destination visited annually by 6 million people from all over the world.
According to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church on February 11, 1858, the Mother of God appeared at the Massabielle cave to a 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous. In 1874, a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes was erected here, then a neo-Gothic basilica. Bernadette Soubirous herself entered the Nevers Monastery in 1866 and was canonized in 1933. You will see the Gruta of the Apparitions, the Upper Basilica, the Crypt and the Basilica of the Holy Rosary. Overnight stay at a hotel.
Day 3: Montserrat – Barcelona
After the breakfast we will return to Barcelona, stopping on our way in Montserrat, where the Benedictine monastery is located at an altitude of 720 m above sea level. During the 3-day trip the group is accompanied by a guide.
On the Montserrat mountain there is a 17th-century basilica with the Black Madonna – La Moreneta – the protector of Catalonia (the second place of pilgrimage in Spain after Santiago de Compostela). Legend has it that the statue was carved by St. Luke, and later brought to Barcelona by St. Peter. Hidden from the Moors, it was to be miraculously found in one of the caves of the Montserrat massif in the 9th century.
Montserrat means the Cut Mountain. According to the legend, the angels cut it with a golden saw to prepare a house for Black Madonna.
In 1920, a museum (Museo de Montserrat) was established in the building of the basilica. Today, the museum holds paintings by many famous Spanish painters, such as El Greco, Pablo Picasso, Dali, as well as foreign paintings by Caravaggio, Degas, Monet, and Tiepolo.
